Well, I guess that’s their right, isn’t it? Isn’t it the capitalistic way to have competition and protect what’s yours? Now, I’m not saying that I necessarily like it, but I am saying that I like it.

Let me explain–clear pictures, TONS of content, and, um . . . FREE.

To see what my favorite thing I’ve found so far is, take the jump.

Yes, that’s what you think it is: Welcome to the Hellmouth. The original pilot for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If I can find this stuff, this clear, on Hulu, SIGN ME UP.

(Wait, I already did that . . .)

One more thing, the embedding? Totally legal, and courtesy of Hulu themselves!

About a year ago, I wrote about my top ten episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I’ve been meaning to write about my top ten episodes of Angel as well. You know, it’s really wierd, but I think I like Angel better as a series–especially season 5. To me that, from top to bottom, was an incredible season of television. At any rate, I like the character development on Angel much more. We get to see the most vicious of all vampires, Angelus, in all his glory in this series, as opposed to an emasculated wimp in Buffy seasons 1 and 3 (we get to see Angelus in season 2). Now granted, Angel wasn’t Angelus in all of this series, but we did get to see him kick some serious rear. With that said, see my top ten after the jump. Here they are (in order by season):

In the Dark (season 1): The Gem of Amarra (first referenced in Buffy season 4 episode “The Harsh Light of Day”) comes to Los Angeles, and makes any vampire immortal–no really, they can’t be killed. The problem, let’s just say a vampire with a very, very bad addiction gets a hold of it first.

I Will Remember You (season 1): Angel becomes mortal again, and Buffy is at his side. They finally get to be a couple, but it doesn’t quite work out. In the end, Angel gets to remember it all, but Buffy doesn’t.

Are You Now or Have You Ever Been (season 2): A CLASSIC. I watch this one over and over. This is the first appearance of the Hyperion, and a Thesulac Demon, who preys on people’s guilt. Best line? “Take them all . . .”

The Trial (season 2): Angel shows Darla what she really means to him. Kudos to my old student, Alan Reid, for suggesting this one when I hadn’t seen it yet.

Reunion (season 2): Darla’s granddaughter, Druscilla, becomes her mother, and then they go to a wine tasting. Angel? He shuts the door.

Double or Nothing (season 3): Angel saves Gunn from someone collecting on an old IOU.

Orpheus (season 4): Angel versus Angelus: the final battle.

Smile Time (season 5): Angel the puppet!

Not Fade Away (season 5): The series finale. Best lines? “Do you want me to be her? . . . My dear Wesley . . .” and “Me? I’ve always wanted to fight a dragon.”

And finally, my favorite episode of the entire Buffyverse:

Destiny (season 5): Spike versus Angel in all their glory. The prize? The Shanshu Prophecy. Best line? “It’s Mountain Dew . . .”

So that’s it. Now I feel better having gotten that off my chest.

My old grad student, Chris Duke, tagged me with the “8 Random Things About Me” meme. The rules are:

1) Post these rules before you give your facts
2) List 8 random facts about yourself
3) At the end of your post, choose (tag) 8 people and list their names, linking to them
4) Leave a comment on their blog, letting them know they’ve been tagged

I’m going to do 1, 2, and 4, just because I hate sending stuff like this on. So for those who are curious, here are my eight random things:

My full name is John Hardy Curry III. I am named after my grandfather and great-grandfather, both of whom where named John Hardy Curry, but not the first or second. My oldest son is named John Hardy Curry IV.

I was born on the exact same date as Bobby Brown, solo singer and member of New Edition as well as Whitney Houston‘s ex-husband, and Michael Sheen, who played Lucian in Underworld.

I was born in Nashville, TN, and Marty Robbins and Dolly Parton were our neighbors.

I was voted “Most Cheerful” in the class of 1987 from Mustang High School. That’s funny to all who know me now who think I’m one of the grumpiest people they know.

I speak a Mayan dialect, K’ekchi’. I learned it (as well as Spanish) as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I served in the Guatemala City North Mission from March of 1988 to April of 1990. Yes, I wore the white shirts and ties with the little black name tags, but no, I didn’t ride a bike. I pretty much walked everywhere, which is why I came back seventy pounds lighter than when I left.

Words cannot describe how much I am a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel–though it’s not to a wierd scale where I’ll dress up and stuff. I just have the DVDs and comics and can tell you all sorts of worthless trivia and how this episode relates to that one, etc. Not only is the writing extremely intelligent and funny, I just find it entertaining! My favorite character is Spike.

My favorite authors are Edgar Allan Poe and John Donne. Quite a contrast, eh?

I am a certified SCUBA diver, although it absolutely terrifies me to do it, but I love it. Shout out to Tim at Nautical Adventures Dive shop on Lake Tenkiller!

So yes, my favorite show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And those who mock that have obviously never watched it and seen how smart the writing is. At any rate, I’ve got the complete seven seasons on DVD, and I’ve been watching them. I decided to put together my top ten list of episodes. Now some were automatics (actually I came up with the first seven immediately), and then I looked to make sure I had at least one episode from each season represented. Here’s what I came up with:

The Automatics: (not in any particular order)

The Zeppo (season 3). Xander defined in the entire Buffyverse. No one ever truly appreciated the strength he brought to the Scoobies. While they send him off to “be safe,” Xander ends up saving everyone else–and they never know it.

The Body (season 5). Buffy finds her mom, Joyce, dead. It’s great that she died of natural causes and not a monster–something Buffy could have controlled. What’s really good? Anya’s speech about Joyce and not understanding death.

Once More with Feeling (season 6). The musical episode. The best part is that it wasn’t gimmicky; it actually advanced the story line as well. And I love the soundtrack.

Hush (season 4). Silent episode–actually nominated for an Emmy. The Gentlemen were just creepy. It was also the first episode where we saw Camden Toy, who played three different monsters on the show (the leader of the Gentlemen, Gnarl, and the Ubervamp).

Becoming, Part II (season 2 finale). Bad Angel–Angelus, Good Angelus–Angel. Buffy makes the hard choice. Buffy: “Close your eyes.” Angel: “Buffy?!?”

Fool for Love (season 5). We see William the Bloody become Spike. He teaches Buffy how he killed two slayers (shout out to Robin Wood in season 7!). “You’re beneath me.”

Passion (season 2). Holy cow. We see for the first time how bad Angelus really can be. Death truly was his art. Not only does he take care of Jenny Calendar, but the whole set up with Giles is masterful.

The Final Three: (not immediate choices, but they round it out–again, no particular order)

The Wish (season 3). Anya is introduced. We see life in Sunnydale without Buffy. Nothing like the emotion of watching Buffy stake Xander to shake you up.

Prophecy Girl (season 1). Buffy takes on the Master. “I’m sixteen years old, Giles. I don’t want to die.”

Beneath You (season 7). Nice play on Fool for Love. Crazy Spike, reformed Spike. “Can we rest now, Buffy? Can we rest?”

At any rate, this is MY top ten. And if you have a problem with them being listed on this here blog, hey–it’s RANDOM musings. I never said this was all about work.
